76 year old Cancer Survivor raises £1000 for Cancer Research UK

A 76 year old Cancer survivor, Alan Baird, raised over £1000 for Cancer Research UK by doing a tandem skydive. Here is his story:

"In 2004, I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. The outlook was not very positive and I ended up bed ridden in Harrogate District Hospital. I had my kidney removed that year as a last attempt to save my life by a brave surgeon. The after care was absolutely excellent and the Mcmillan nurse who helped me through it was great. Obviously my family and friends were supportive constantly and I really wouldn't be here without everyone's support.

In 2005 I was referred to Leeds Teaching Hospital after a collapse at home. It was found that I had a secondary tumour incorporating the head of the pancreas as well as the duodenum. I was given a small chance of survival and at one point during my treatment, my family were all called to in to be with me as they thought i would not make it. I ended up having a pancreaticoduodectomy which is also known as Whipple proceedure. This is where the surgeon removes the distal segment of the stomach, the first and second portions of the duodenum, the head of the pancreas and the common bile duct."

What a truely inspirational story!

If you raise double the cost of your skydiving course, you get to jump for free whilst donating money to a great cause at the same time!

Recently we added CHICKS to our list.

So why do a charity skydive in aid of CHICKS?

We know that childhood can be a difficult experience if you are having a tough time at home. At CHICKS we provide free six-day respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK, who would not otherwise have a break in that year.

The children CHICKS support come from a variety of backgrounds – those living in poverty, children that are being neglected or abused, either mentally, physically or sexually, children who have lost parents or even children who are full time young carers.

CHICKS has two retreats, one based in Brentor, near Tavistock, Devon and the other based in Tywardreath, near Par in Cornwall. Both retreats take a maximum of 16 children at one time; 8 boys and 8 girls, within an 8-11 or 12-15 age range, which ensures a friendly and supportive “family” atmosphere. The children take part in a host of fun activities, leaving with lots of wonderful memories and new friends. The impact these breaks have is astonishing.

So why do a charity skydive in aid of Victim Support?

Victim Support speaks to almost 1.5 million victims and 285,000 witnesses of crime every year; around 100,000 of them are children.

Victim Support is the national charity that gives free and confidential help to victims of crime, witnesses, their family, friends and anyone else affected across England and Wales. It also speaks out as a national voice for victims and witnesses and campaigns for change.

People react to crime in many ways. Usually the effects are short-lived, but some people’s lives are changed forever. Crime can make people very afraid, worried, guilty and angry. It also causes a huge range of practical problems for victims.

Victim Support has over 6,000 specially-trained volunteers across England and Wales who give practical and emotional support to help victims and witnesses find the strength to carry on after a crime. As well as helping victims in the community, the volunteers support witnesses at court – before, during and after a trial. This includes extra help for young victims or witnesses, such as TV links or screens so they don’t have to come face-to-face with offenders in the courtroom.

How your support can help:
•£50 can help meet a volunteer's expenses while they support a victim of domestic violence.
•£200 can assist in giving support to a child witness before, during and after a trial.
•£500 can help them give ongoing support to a family recently bereaved due to a violent crime.

British Formation Skydiving Nationals gets bigger and bigger!

The British Formation Skydiving National Championships just got bigger making it the 2nd biggest in the world just pipped by the USA. Not bad for a little island with dodgy weather!

57 teams competed at the event which was held at a Target Skysports near Brigg in N. Lincs and despite a bad weather forecast, the meet was finished in 1.5 days!

Sparky from UK Skydiving Adventures wasn't competing this year as is expecting a baby however was kept busy on the ground coaching the teams she had been working during the season as well as helping out any other team who needed it! The results were very pleasing - AAA Sonic Nutz (bronze), AA Sirius (bronze), A Tetris (bronze) and Rookie Raykipo (silver).

Most teams are having a well deserved rest before training resumes again for the 2011 season.

Charity Skydive in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital

You may remember a previous post on the 12th April where we featured the story of refuse collector, Stephen Van Niekerk who was raising money for a 3 year old girl who was undergoing chemotherapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital after having a Wilms tumour removed from her kidney.

Stephen opted to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital not by doing a Tandem Skydive or Static Line Parachute Jump as favoured by many charity jumpers. Instead he chose to do an Accelerated Freefall Jump, the most demanding of courses that we offer. After 6 hours of ground training, Stephen jumped with 2 instructors from 12,000 feet, completed a series of exercises in freefall before deploying his own parachute at 5,000 feet before navigating his way back to the ground solo.

Stephen worked extremely hard and raised over £1,500 for the hospital and has decided to do further skydives to raise even more money money for the charity. This is truly a fantastic achievement!

Accelerated Free Fall Skydiving Courses are becoming more popular

This year has been a very busy year with AFF with courses being run most weekends.

See below some feedback from one of our recent ground school students who went on to complete his Level 1 AFF Skydive the following day:

"Dear Sparky

I wanted to write to say thank you for Friday’s training.I found the training every bit as enjoyable as the jump and I couldn’t have been better prepared.

On Thursday my a$$ started to twitch a bit at the thought of having to go through the door. It was the one part that concerned me as I have flown a paraglider in the past and the control of the canopy felt almost identical if a little slower. I was worried that I might freeze at the door and not be able to do it.

Come Friday after the mornings training session it was slightly better and by the end of play Friday there was nothing going to stop me going up (apart from you guys and the weather)

The exit was really easy and I didn’t flinch which surprised me. Don’t think we could have had a better day with the weather. I had an amazing time, I learned a lot and I have a taste for a pass time I can’t afford which isn’t so good.

I nailed the reserve drill first time on Saturday AM and felt confident that if it all went wrong I’d be able to sort myself out. The training was great and informal enough to encourage a sense of fun but with a very serious undertone.

I seriously don’t think we could have asked for better. I did have a wrapped up pilot but it didn’t affect the canopy so no issues there.

My instructors in the air were excellent and despite Tex telling me he didn’t like the look of my chute trying to get a rise out of me they were both excellent. Everyone inspired confidence and I couldn’t have been in better hands.

Ill be back and already have 5 mates that want to come do tandems.

Restless Beings works on two key fronts; the prevention or relief of poverty through development over a sustained period of time and the active promotion of human rights and to raise awareness of human rights violations of silenced communities.

Great Ormond Street Charity Skydive

We received this letter from one of our charity jumpers and we were so touched by it that we thought we would post to the blog for everyone to see. It really is a very moving story.

"Hi my name is Stephen van Niekerk. I work as a refuse collector for Castle Point Council.

Over the past two years the team on my lorry have built a relationship with a very brave, special and kind young girl called Lilyann Quinlan. On a Monday morning she would wave to us at her window and we wave back and hoot the horn now and again. This made her day and kept her smiling. It became so constant that we began to look for her at her window where she stands with her family members just so she could make our day...

One Monday morning in February 2009 she wasn’t there and all to be seen was an envelope on the black bag. Inside the envelope was a picture for each of us and a letter saying that she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour on her kidney, and that she was sorry she wasn’t there to wave but she was in and out hospital getting treatment. She has had the tumour, kidney and Lymph Nodes removed at Great Ormond Street, where she finds the staff are very kind and nice to her. This little girl has undergone Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and regularly undergoes Blood and Platelet Transfusions to prepare for next Chemo session.

Lilyann leaves us letters and pictures when she can’t wave at us and we look forward to seeing her as it’s sad to watch someone who is only three years old go through such a traumatic experience. Last Christmas Steve Smith, Robert Locke and I gave her a present as she spent Christmas in hospital. We gave her some PJ’s to wear in hospital and some other bits to keep her busy and smiling.
This little angel has touched our hearts and we want to do something special for her this year by raising money for her Charity – Great Ormond Street. We know we have to do something extreme in order to raise a large sum of money, so this is why I’ve decided to sky dive from 12000 feet and gain my Accelerated Free Fall Qualification in August 2010. I will not be strapped to anybody and will not be on a static line. I will study for 6 hours and pull my own shoot and do several more jumps to gain the qualification.

I have got some photos of her and gained permission from her family to do the course for charity. I really hope together with your help we can raise a fair sum of money and let little girls like Liyann get better and allow them to have a proper life.

Formation Skydiving Tunnel Camps with an International Flavour!

It has been a busy couple of weeks at the indoor skydiving facility at Airkix, M.Keynes for skydiving coach Claire "Sparky" Scott!

First it was a group from Ireland who wanted to work on their basic formation skydiving skills. Everyone made a huge progression which resulted in some very cool 4-way formation skydiving at the end of the day.

Next in was a group from Italy who attended a tunnel camp run by 90percent, the producer of the Italian Skydiving Magazine. This time it was a couple of guys you had well over 1000 jumps, but no formal formation skydiving coaching. However don't believe that you can't teach an old dog new tricks as both radically changed the way they skydived by the end of the session and will be the envy of all when they return home with their new updated techniques! Sparky will be coaching on more 90percent camps in the future.

Lastly we had a 4-way formation skydiving team from Germany consisiting of members from Team Timber. They are no strangers to Airkix and regularly attend tunnel camps run by Sparky. They flew for around 4 hours across 3 days and came away with some new 4-way knowledge as well as a number of firsts for some of the manoeuvres they performed in the tunnel - no easy feat considering that 3 of them were over 6 feet!

Sparky joins the elite Darkside Freefly Coaching Team

GB Team Wins 16-way Formation Skydiving Meet

Members of the British 8-Way Formation Skydiving Team and the Women's Formation Skydiving Team including Claire "Sparky" Scott from UK Skydiving Adventures, won the gold medal at a recent 16-way Formation Skydiving Competition in Empuriabrava, Spain.

Despite fierce competition from teams from countries including Spain, Belgium, South Africa and the UK, Team "Sore Point" cruised to victory after completing 8 jumps.

The name "Sore Point" came from the number of bruises that team members endured whilst all trying to exit the plane at the same time, sometimes with hilarious consequences!

181 women become a new World Record holders for the biggest all female skydiving formation!!

Over 200 of the most elite women skydivers from 31 different countries travelled to Skydive Perris, California, USA in September 2009 to take part in a new Women's World Record attempt in aid of Breast Cancer. Claire "Sparky" Scott from UK Skydiving Adventures took part in the record along with her team mates from the British Women's Formation Skydiving Team who are the current reigning Women's World Champions.

The goal was to build a skydiving formation of 180 women breaking the record of 151 women set in 2005. After 6 days of training, using 9 planes and jumping from an altitude of 19,000 feet, this amazing group of women some of whom are breast cancer survivors, led by world famous skydiving organiser Kate Cooper-Jenson surpassed their original goal and built a formation consisting of 181 women!

Just over $1,000,000 was raised for City of Hope Breast Cancer Research!

Sparky wins the Sabiha Gökçen Medal!!

Claire “Sparky” Scott from UK Skydiving Adventures has been awarded the FAI Sabiha Gökçen Medal. This is an award donated by the Turkish Aero Club and is awarded to people who have won multiple world titles. Sparky who has been a member of the British Skydiving Team since 1999, has with 3 different formation skydiving teams (Team Vmax, Team Airkix and Bodyflight Storm) won 5 gold medals at various Formation Skydiving World Cups and World Championships, making her the most successful woman in the world in this category.

Sparky was nominated for the award by the British Parachute Association (BPA) through the Royal Aero Club and will be presented with the medal at the 2010 Royal Aero Club Awards in London.

FS1 tunnel camps with Sparky at Airkix

Sparky from UK Skydiving Adventures is set to run a series of tunnel camps at Airkix Indoor Wind Tunnel aimed especially at those skydivers who are working towards their FS1 or who have just recently gained their FS1. This camp will not only help you develop individual skills but will also give you the chance to put these skills into practice as a 4-way which after all is what you are ultimately working towards.

The tunnel camp is split into 2 parts:

- 20mins of 1on1 (2 x 10min sessions) – working on individual skills such as basic body position, forward / backward movement, slow fall / fast fall, turns (using arms & legs), side slides, positional strength and grip taking
- 20mins of 4-way ( 2 x 10min sessions) – 3 students to 1 coach – giving you the experience of building different formations in a variety of different slots, working on communication, formation sets ups, grip management and key discipline.

By the end of this camp, you should feel confident to complete any remaining 1on1 FS coached jumps and make the subsequent 4-way FS1 qualification dives seem a little less daunting.

These camps will be running on a number of dates throughout September and October with varying start times. Spaces are limited (see below):

- Fri 4th Sept – meeting at 8.30am – 3 places
- Mon 7th Sept – meeting from 11.30am – 3 places
- Thurs 8th Oct – meeting either from 8am or from 3.30pm – 6 places
- Fri 9th Oct – meeting from 8am – 3 places

British National Skydiving Championships make the record books as the competition is completed in just 1 day!

Organisers at this years British National Championships held near Brigg, Lincolnshire made good use of the weather and managed to complete the competition in just 1 day. The event which is considered to be the 2^nd biggest Nationals in the world (US National Championships are the biggest) this year attracted 49 teams.

Sparky from UK Skydiving Adventures is especially pleased with this years results, with 6 of the teams she coached all picking up medals! Army Nemesis (see pictured) won gold in the AA event with RAFSPA Firefly taking bronze. In the singe A category, all 3 of Sparky’s teams i.e. Unagi, Slot Machines and Sirius came 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd whilst Gravity came 2^nd in the Rookie Class. Sparky’s own pick up team Pussy Galore came 2^nd in the AAA category behind the well trained team Satori.

British Parachute Association Coaching Road Show at Amesbury, Wiltshire attracts competition teams training for this years British National Skydiving

On the 4^th June, 31 employees from Betfair did a charity tandem skydive at the centre at Bicester, Oxon raising over £35,000 for the charity Sparks. It was a glorious sunny day and after everyone had jumped, they tucked into a BBQ whilst watching the remaining fundraisers make their jump.

“Sparks decided to hold a group skydive with one of our corporate partners for the first time in June. UK Skydiving Adventures were absolutely brilliant and a pleasure to work with. 1st UK Skydiving League meet of the year at Bicester, Oxon

The promise of good weather resulted in a good turnout of competition teams. Sparky from UK Skydiving Adventures who was there in a British Parachute Association coaching capacity had her work cut out as she tried to coach all 22 teams, and didn’t leave the creeper pad and exit trainer all day! Of the teams that entered, there were a few that Sparky had already been coaching earlier this year i.e. Army Nemesis and RAFSPA Firefly in the AA category, Unagi and Slot Machines in the A category and Gravity in Rookie. After a closely fought competition with a jump off being needed to decide the placings in the AA category, both Unagi and Gravity won gold and Army Nemesis won silver in their respective categories.

In May Claire “Sparky” Scott coached the Army’s competition formation skydiving Team – Nemesis during their training camp at Skydive Elsinore, California, US. In blistering temperatures (mid 30’s), the team managed over 100 jumps in 2 weeks proving how determined they were to dominate the British National and Army Championships to be held in August this year.

The team still have several hours of Indoor Skydiving Training planned as well as a number of weekends to consolidate what they have learnt. Their first competition test will be at the end of May at the parachute centre in Bicester.

British Women’s Formation Skydiving Team, the current reigning World Champions attend the Royal Aero Club Awards

Bodyflight Storm, the British Women’s Formation Skydiving Team were awarded the prestigious Prince of Wales Cup at The Royal Aero Club Awards. The ceremony held at the RAF Club in London was attended by a number of different aero sport associations and the awards were presented by Prince Michael of Kent.

Bodyflight Storm was presented their award following their gold medal victory at the 2008 World Championships in France. This was the 3rd time that Claire “Sparky” Scott had received the award having been awarded it twice before with 2 other teams.

Sparky was also awarded a Royal Aero Club Gold Medal after she became the most successful UK competitor having won 5 gold medals on the world stage. This also the 2^nd time she has received this top award, making her only the 2^nd person in the history of the Royal Aero Club awards to have received this award more than once.

RAFSPA Team Firefly get coached by Sparky in readiness for this years competitions

In April, the RAF Formation Skydiving Team, Firefly attended a training camp at Skydive Perris in California, US with their coach Claire “Sparky” Scott from UK Skydiving Adventures.

The team whose goals are to medal at the National Skydiving Championships and the Army Championships in August this year, managed 53 training jumps in 10 days. The team now has a number of hours of indoor skydiving training planned plus several weekends of training at a skydiving centre near Bicester, Oxfordshire.

British Parachute Association Coaching Road Show at Shotton Colliery attended by World and British Champions!

In March 09, five times World Champion Claire “Sparky” Scott and 9 times British Champion Andy Scott travelled to the skydiving centre based at Shotton Colliery, Co. Durham to coach at the British Parachute Association (BPA) Coaching Road Show.

Local skydivers of all experience levels attended the event with the aim of improving their individual skills. Bad weather on the Saturday enabled the coaches to run a series of seminars covering basic flying skills, different skydiving formations and team dynamics.

Sunday was a bright sunny day and everyone managed to jump and put into practice what they had learnt the day before resulting in a couple of skydivers achieving their FS1 certificate!

Claire "Sparky" Scott wins Extreme Sports Person of the Year at the Oxfordshire Sports Awards

Claire "Sparky" Scott from UK Skydiving Adventures clinched the Extreme Sports Person of the Year Award at the Oxfordshire Sports Awards on the 9th November, 2008 held at The Kassam Stadium, Oxford, the home of football team Oxford United.

Sparky beat off stiff competition from the 16 year old Kite Surfer - Tom Butler and the Mountain Boarder - Tim Ford.

The award was in recognition of Sparky winning the Formation Skydiving World Championships for the 5th time, this time with Team Bodyflight Storm. She had previously won the championships with teams VMax and Team Airkix.

The award was presented by Anna Hemmings, 2 times Olympic and 6 times World Champion Canoeist.
